Tamo daleko is a waltz-like lament written during the Serbian army’s exile in World War I, when all seemed lost. It captures the sorrow of the soldiers and their longing for home — before their return and ultimate victory.

Janičar is a haunting ballad sung by legendary Predrag Gojković — Cune, one of Serbia’s greatest vocalists ever. For Serb parents, this one hits especially hard.

  In an Ottoman-era (1459-1800s) Serbian village, a Janissary (elite Ottoman soldier) returns to pillage his birthplace. He’s a Serb, taken as a child, converted, and raised to fight for the empire. His mother recognizes him and pleads with him to stop, to remember who he is. He refuses.

  Janičar reflects the suffering Serbs endured under 500 years of Ottoman rule. Serbian children were taken from their parents and forced into enemy ranks. Yet despite this, and despite centuries of forced assimilation, Serbs held on to their identity, Orthodox Christian faith, and ultimately — their freedom.

On the surface, Djurdjevdan appears to be a romantic ballad. Yet, on closer inspection, we unravel multiple meanings.

  The lyrics speak of St. George’s Day (May 6) arrival and the pain of being apart from the one you love on this special day.

  Made famous by musician Goran Bregović, you’ll hear this song at weddings, festivals and kafanas.

  But, few are aware of it origins.

  It originated in 1942, May 6, 1942 when Ustaše loaded Sarajevo Serbs onto trains bound for the Jasenovac death camp. Sensing their fate, the prisoners began to — sing. This song honours their memory, pain, and courage.

  This song honours Stevan Sinđelić (Stevan Rakić), a Serbian hero from the First Serbian Uprising 1804-1813.
